Step 1: Be a Traditional Notary

To become an online notary, you must first hold a current commission as a traditional notary public in the state of Florida. If you are not already commissioned as a traditional notary public, you can learn more about how to apply on the Secretary of State’s website.


Step 2: Obtain the Necessary Electronic Documents

2.1   Obtain an Electronic Seal

  • Sign up with NotaryLive and follow the prompts; if you already have an account, sign in to create the seal
  • Enter the information associated with your traditional notary commission and your seal will be generated
  • Click Download to save the seal




2.2   Obtain a Digital Certificate
  • Go to IdenTrust
  • Scroll down and click Buy Now
  • Select IGC Notaries Basic Assurance | Individual Identity | Software Storage $77.00-$182.00
  • Select your desired certificate validity period (prices vary)
  • Complete the order


Step 3: Obtain a surety bond and an errors & omissions insurance policy

These should each be for $25,000. You can purchase your surety bond here, and your errors & omissions insurance policy here from the National Notary Association.


Step 4: Register as an Online Notary with the Secretary of State
  • Complete an approved RON certification course. There are several courses listed right on the Florida Secretary of State’s website. We recommend the NNA’s “Florida State-Required Remote Online Notary Education” course, which can be found here.
  • After you’ve successfully completed a RON Certification Course, Click Here to register for your Online Notary Public Commission. Remember to attach a copy of the certificate from the certification course.
  • Mail your application, $10 registration fee (paid by check), proof of your Surety Bond and E&O Insurance, and the certificate of completion from the RON training course to the Department of State.
